This study examines how frequently EFL students use GenAI tools in language learning and assesses their levels of anxiety, stress, and fear. It also explores the role of GenAI in reducing foreign language anxiety and increasing enjoyment among learners. The participants were 293 EFL students aged 12–15 enrolled in preparatory school, with data analysed using SPSS and JASP.
The findings indicate that GenAI is underused, resulting in a "usage gap" that highlights broader challenges in technological adoption, including disparities between available technology and its classroom implementation. Students may also misunderstand GenAI's capabilities or be unaware of its potential for language acquisition. Professional development focused on practical AI applications in EFL contexts could better prepare teachers to support student engagement. When actively used, GenAI provides a judgement-free practice environment that helps reduce language anxiety. The study's key finding is a strong correlation between GenAI use, decreased anxiety, and improved learner satisfaction.
